Dr. Hubert Muchalski is a native of Poland where he received his B.S./M.S. in Chemistry at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Wrocław Tech) in 2006. During these studies, he investigated the diselenide catalyzed hydroperoxide oxidation of naphthalenes. In 2006, he began graduate studies at Vanderbilt with prof. Jeffrey N. Johnston. There Hubert developed a unique a-diazo imide reagent that enabled the development of the Brønsted acid catalyzed syn-glycolate Mannich reaction. He then used the Bronsted acid-promoted azide-alkene synthesis of vic-amino alcohols to develop a two directional synthesis approach to (+)-zwittermicin A. Hubert was a postdoctoral scholar with prof. Ned Porter until 2015 where he investigated kinetic isotope effect of lipid peroxidation.
In 2015 he joined the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Fresno State as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. In 2021 he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. Hubert is also active in member of the American Chemical Society. He served on the Executive Committee of the San Joaquin Valley Local Section, first as Treasurer (2016–2017), then as Councilor (2018–2023); currently serves as Chair-elect (2024). Hubert also serves on the ACS Committee for Professional Training (CPT) which establishes guidelines and standards for the approval of bachelor’s degree programs in chemistry.
